The Digital Museum: If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)
by LA CINEASTE
Barry Jenkin’s If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) brought to fruition the vision of James Baldwin from its original 1974 novel of the same name. Beale Street provides the reality of love and sacrifice for two young Black adolescents navigating 1970’s Harlem and coping with newfound love and loss. The screen-to-novel episode juxtaposes and contrasts both visions from the incredible creative minds of Jenkins and Baldwin.
