Paul Thomas Anderson’s films (although few in number) are among the most inspiring, ambitious and emotionally involving of the past fifteen years. They surround a vast variety of themes such as chance, power, loneliness, religion, and love. Each of his films flawlessly incorporates handfuls of elements like these, which with ensemble casts isn’t too hard if give each of them their own story. However, the thing Joel finds most fascinating about his films is how beautifully he can interweave these characters, storylines, and themes (especially in Boogie Nights and Magnolia). PTA’s films have had a profound effect on Joel’s love of cinema, some of them ranking in his all-time favorites. So why wouldn’t he tackle PTA for his latest director tribute?
