Zhang Yimou’s 1990 film Ju Dou thematically addresses concepts of national identity in modern China. In this video essay, Digging Deeper explores the ways in which Yimou so beautifully weaves his morality play about the powerlessness of individual desire in the face of a Confucian-inspired feudalist society.
