Carol: The Love Story in a Look

by Digging Deeper

Because of the forbidden nature of the affair that arises between the two main characters in Todd Haynes’s Carol, their romance by necessity cannot be overt—it’s very existence is unspeakable. In this video essay, Digging Deeper illustrates how director Todd Haynes conveys the love between Carol and Therese not through words, but through facial expressions, and the visual language of cinematic storytelling, including color, framing and subtly symbolic props and environments.
