Can Villains Be Heroes?
At the heart of every story is a conflict: often a character butting heads with another character. In the past the distinction between heroes and villains was usually pretty clear: good versus evil. In this video essay Alex Meyers examines how, as ideologies and schools of thought have evolved over the past 10,000 years, so too have our conceptions of heroes and villains. By comparing and contrasting the early days of comic books with more recent film adaptations, Meyers illustrates how the line between good guys and bad guys has become much more blurred.
