I’ve Learned that …

“I’ve learned that…

…no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

…you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. (MY FAVORITE!)

…regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life.

…making a ‘living’ is not the same thing as making a ‘life’.

…life sometimes gives you a second chance.

…you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.

…if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.

…whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.

…even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.

…every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch – holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

…I still have a lot to learn.”

Following is a talk by Rolf Potts , the author of Vagabonding, a book that I greatly enjoyed reading.

Without further ado, here it is.

Startup visa – boon or bane ?

Brad Feld, a VC at the Foundry Group, came up with the idea of a Startup Visa after being inspired with Paul Graham’s blog post titled “The Founder Visa”. A few high profile calls and a year later, here we are.  A bill  introduced last month by senator John Kerry proposes just such a visa for immigrant entrepreneurs. Personally, it is interesting to see Congressional leaders not afraid to acknowledge that innovation, job creation and most importantly America’s Technology Leadership depends on the ability to attract and retain the world’s best.

red_carpetThe start up Visa act of 2010 would create a two year visa for immigrant entrepreneurs. The basic requirement being that they are able to raise a minimum of $250,000, with $100,000 coming from a qualified U.S. angel or venture investor. After two years, if the immigrant entrepreneur is able to create five or more jobs (not including their children or spouse), attract an additional $1 million in investment, or produce $1 million in revenues, he or she will become a legal resident.

Regardless of what everyone says, America is still the Land of Opportunity and this is the place to be for an entrepreneur. Data has shown that about 25% of the technology companies started in the US from 1995 to 2005, at least one key founder was foreign born.  So here is our chance to up the ante and “suck” the Global Talent pool… Lest it go to other emerging countries.  America needs new ideas and entrepreneurs after the bashing we took in this recession.  We say roll the red carpet .
